What Is ETOPS? Definition & Meaning in Aviation

ETOPS (extended-range twin-engine operations) is the approval that lets a two-engine airliner fly routes where the nearest suitable airport can be far away.

In plain language

Each approval allows a maximum diversion time to an alternate airport, for example 180 minutes. The newer ICAO term is EDTO (extended diversion time operations).

Example

Twin-engine wide-bodies flying between Pakistan and Europe or North America plan routes within their approved diversion time.

Why it matters

ETOPS and EDTO are why twin-engine aircraft can fly long over-water or remote routes. They also shape routing, which is why you may see a long-haul flight keep to certain corridors.
