What Is Windshear? Definition & Meaning in Aviation

Windshear is a sudden change in wind speed or direction over a short distance, which can make an aircraft lose or gain lift quickly.

In plain language

It is most dangerous close to the ground. Thunderstorms can cause strong windshear. Airports may have detection systems, and crews are trained to respond.

Example

A pilot who encounters windshear on approach may go around and wait for the storm to pass.

Why it matters

Windshear is a serious hazard near the ground, which is why thunderstorms near an airport can close it. Crews are trained to respond, and detection systems help.
