What Is Crosswind? Definition & Meaning in Aviation
A crosswind is wind that blows across the runway rather than along it.
In plain language
Every aircraft has a maximum demonstrated crosswind for landing and takeoff. If the crosswind is stronger, a different runway is used or the flight diverts.
Example
Strong gusty wind during a thunderstorm can make landings difficult and cause go-arounds.
Why it matters
Crosswinds explain why airports switch runways and why some landings look sideways. Each aircraft has a limit, and above it a flight must divert or wait.
