Common Causes of Delays at Pakistani Airports

The most common causes of delay at Pakistani airports are winter fog on the northern plains, summer storms and dust, peak-time congestion, late aircraft and, on mountain routes, visual weather limits.

Winter fog

From roughly December to January, dense fog is frequent around Lahore, Islamabad, Multan and other northern plains airports. Low visibility slows or stops departures and arrivals. Airports and aircraft with low-visibility capability keep operating longer. See fog and flight delays and CAT III.

Monsoon and storms

During the monsoon (about July to September) thunderstorms and heavy rain cause delays and diversions. See monsoon and flights.

Dust and heat

Dust storms cut visibility, and very hot days can limit aircraft performance. See dust storms and summer heat.

Northern flights

Mountain airports depend on visual conditions. See why northern flights cancel.

Peak-season crowding

Eid, summer holidays and Hajj and Umrah seasons bring more passengers, longer queues and tighter schedules.

Aircraft and operations

A small fleet means little spare capacity: when one aircraft is late or out of service, others are affected. Late gates, handling and baggage can add minutes.

Airspace restrictions

Closures or restrictions can force longer routes and change schedules; see why flights avoid certain airspace.

What you can do

In fog season, consider flights after late morning (fog usually lifts by then), allow buffer time for connections, and check the weather before travel. Live weather is on every airport’s page, such as Lahore weather.
