Best Antenna Placement for ADS-B Reception

For ADS-B reception, antenna height and a clear view of the sky matter more than anything else. A basic antenna on a roof will beat an expensive antenna in a basement.

Height and line of sight

ADS-B signals travel in straight lines, so anything between the antenna and the aircraft blocks the signal: buildings, hills, trees and even a window frame. Place the antenna as high as practical, with the widest possible view of the horizon.

Outdoors or at a window

Outdoors is best. If you must use a window, choose one facing the busiest direction (for example towards an airport), and expect reduced range. Metallic-coated or energy-saving glass blocks signals.

Cable

The cable between antenna and receiver loses signal, and the loss rises with length and thin cable. Use short, low-loss coaxial cable, or put the receiver close to the antenna and run network cable and power to it instead.

Interference

Mobile network and other signals near 1090 MHz can swamp the receiver. A 1090 MHz filter or a receiver with one built in improves results. Keep the antenna away from other transmitters and electronics.

Check results

Look at the range plot on your receiver’s map page. Gaps tell you where the signal is blocked. Move the antenna a little and compare.

Why it matters for Pakistan

Mountains and dense areas create gaps in coverage. A well-placed receiver in a gap region helps the whole community. See become a feeder and how to build an ADS-B receiver.
