What Is Taxiway? Definition & Meaning in Aviation

A taxiway is a path for aircraft to move between runways, aprons and terminals.

In plain language

Taxiways are marked with letters and lights. Long taxi times at a busy airport add to the time between leaving the gate and taking off.

Example

On arrival, an aircraft may take several minutes to taxi from the runway to its gate.

Why it matters

Taxiways explain why a landing is not the end of your journey. At large airports taxiing can take 10 to 20 minutes, which adds to the time between landing and reaching the gate.
